Susan Stripling Photography

Susan Stripling Photography is a New York City studio, on West 38th Street in Manhattan, that started in 2001 and has photographed more than 800 weddings. Susan says she has been photographing weddings in the Hamptons for 20 years.

How they work

The style is mainly documentary, on a mix of film and digital, using natural light and flash with a strong feel for shadow and contrast. She discourages shot lists, keeps formal family photos to a short list of about nine groups, and asks for an hour with the couple for portraits. Every collection includes a second photographer, and a typical eight hour day yields about 650 images. Travel to the Hamptons is built into the price, and rehearsal dinners and welcome parties can be added to a collection.

Who it suits

Couples who want real moments over posed ones and like a moodier, more dramatic look. Her East End work includes Bridgehampton Tennis and Surf Club, Gurney’s in Montauk, which she has photographed twice and wrote a venue guide for, and a wedding in East Hampton. It is not for couples who want a long list of planned shots or a budget under $9,000.
